ABOUT THEODORE “TED” JOHNSON

I was one of fifty-seven.

This is the story of the family that changed us all.

FAMILY

“They never legally adopted me.”

“But there came a time when we all agreed they were mine—and I was theirs.”

“I inherited the greatest gift from them. I simply want to accept that inheritance and carry the torch until I can hand it off.”

THE PLACE THAT BECAME FAMILY

Cedar Hill changed the direction of my life.

I came into the Gorman home as a young person who needed a family. What I found was not perfection. I found people who stayed, expected something of me, forgave me, and gave me room to grow.

That experience became the foundation for the story I eventually wrote down.

MY BROTHER AND HIS FAMILY

Family remained part of the story.

This photograph is a treasured part of that story: Billy with his wife and daughters.

The larger story was never only about one house or one chapter. It is also about what family, belonging, responsibility, and second chances can make possible over time.

A BROTHER REMEMBERED

Billy led. I followed.

My brother Billy was part of my story long before there was a book or Leave One Light On.

We grew up together, were separated by circumstances we did not choose, and found our way into adulthood carrying different parts of the same family story.

Some questions about Billy’s life may never have answers. But remembering him is not only about how his life ended. It is also about the brother he was, the family he loved, and what his story continues to teach me about showing up for others.

“Billy led. I followed.”

THE BOOK

The story eventually became The Light in the Window.

I wrote it because there comes a time when you realize your story is not just about you.

THE LIGHT IS STILL ON

Now it is my turn.

I was once the one who needed somebody to leave a light on. Someone did.

Someone left a light on for me. Now it is my turn to leave one on for someone else.

THE STORY CONTINUES

Not perfectly. Faithfully.

The point is not a perfect life. It is what can become possible when someone makes room, stays, and keeps showing up.
